Why won’t my cat eat the better food I got for him?

Hey guys,

I’ve got a 2.5-year-old cat that I’ve had since he was a kitten. I used to feed him Untamed food, but he lost interest in it after a while, so I switched him to Felix about two years ago. Felix isn’t the best, so I’ve been balancing it with high-quality dry food (Thrive).

Recently, I’ve tried getting him back on Untamed, but he just sniffs it and walks away. I’ve even left it out overnight, and it’s still untouched in the morning. I’m wasting so much money now.

Is it okay for him to stay with Felix for the rest of his life? How do I even get him to eat something he doesn’t want? And why do cats love Felix so much?

Honestly, if your cat is eating and happy, I wouldn’t stress too much. My cat only eats dry food, ground meats, and some fish (but not canned). I’m not saying it’s the best diet, but she’s 4 years old now, and she wasn’t expected to live that long! As long as your cat is healthy and content, that’s what matters most.

Have you tried a different brand? My cat refused Wellness dry food and a certain batch of lamb-flavored wet food he used to love. Sometimes they can just detect something off about the food, even if it’s the same brand.

@Skylar
Yeah, some animals are just super picky or seem to have it out for a particular food brand.

I’ve seen people get so hung up on feeding their pets the ‘right’ food. If your cat is healthy and your vet isn’t concerned, I wouldn’t worry too much. You could always try different ‘premium’ brands, but if he’s happy with Felix, it’s okay to stick with that. Better to have a cat that eats than one that doesn’t!

Maybe try slowly mixing the new food with the current one, or offer different flavors or textures. Warming the food a little might help too. If he’s still refusing it after all that, a vet check-up could rule out any health issues that might be affecting his appetite.
