Why is my senior dog barking at 4am... help?

Hey everyone, I have a 14-year-old Pomeranian mix who’s suddenly started barking at 4am. He usually only barks when he’s alone or needs to go out. Normally, he wants to go to the bathroom, but even when we let him out, he won’t go back to sleep. It’s like he’s determined to keep us up by either barking or jumping on the bed. We tried a puddle pad, and although he uses it, he still barks. We even moved him to the basement with a large enclosure and a small dog house he’s always loved. He has a puddle pad there too, but he just won’t stop barking! It’s driving my kids crazy, and sound machines aren’t cutting it. I’m at a loss here… any ideas?

Oh man, I feel for you! My dog did this for a while too. Have you thought about trying a calming spray or something? It might help him chill out at night.

What kind of calming spray are you talking about?

@Raine
There are sprays with pheromones that can help relax dogs. You can find them online or at pet stores.

Maybe he’s just getting anxious? If he’s used to sleeping close to you, the move to the basement might be stressing him out. Have you tried letting him sleep in your room?

We thought about it, but he’s been barking so much that we’re worried he’ll just keep us up all night.

I had a similar issue with my older dog. Sometimes they just need a bit more comfort as they age. Have you tried an extra blanket or a heated bed?

Good idea! I’ve heard heated beds can really help older dogs feel cozy.

Honestly, I’d suggest checking with your vet. There might be underlying health issues causing the barking.

Yeah, that’s true. I’ll definitely make an appointment and see what they say.

Also, have you tried some gentle training? Like teaching him a command to settle down? It might take time, but it could help!

We’ve done some basic training, but I guess we need to be more consistent. Thanks for the tip!
