I keep seeing posts here about kittens found by the road or pets tossed in the trash. What kind of person could do this? How can someone be so cold-hearted? It really makes me wonder who these people are and why no one seems to hold them accountable. It really bothers me, and they can’t keep getting away with it.
It’s so sad, but it’s happening more than we realize. A lot of people got pets during COVID, and now with the economy or their life changes, they’re abandoning them. It’s a shame… pets aren’t just a trend you can discard when you’re tired of them.

We had a beautiful yellow cat show up at our place about four years ago. I named him Sugar and started feeding him. When it got cold, I’d let him inside, even though I’m more of a dog person. He stayed with us for about two years until one morning, I found him lifeless at the bottom of our steps. It broke my heart, and we buried him next to our other pets who had passed. He was someone’s pet once, for sure.
Now, we’ve got several barn cats and kittens hanging around, and some are getting under our house. Fleas are everywhere! Luckily, the exterminator is coming tomorrow. I’ve already tried sealing up the opening, but I’ll have to call animal control to rehome the kittens before they get too wild.
The people doing this don’t care about animals. You won’t find them on this forum.
Some people feel too ashamed to surrender their pets to a shelter, especially with shelters being full. Where I live, shelters are so overcrowded they only take strays, which makes people either lie about their pets being strays or worse, dump them somewhere.
The neighbor kids told me their dad was planning to dump their puppy once it got too big. When they got evicted, they left the poor dog locked inside the house for weeks! Luckily, someone heard the barking and broke down the door to rescue her. She was so skinny and weak, but she’s in a loving home now. No one called the authorities, but at least the dog is safe.
There are people out there who actually steal pets too. A friend of mine had her young Maltese stolen from her yard. After months of searching, she thought she’d never see her dog again. Six years later, she got a call from animal control. They found her dog in terrible condition in a trash can! She wasn’t involved, but she was able to get her dog back. The poor dog had been living in awful conditions, was hurt, and had clearly been used for breeding. My friend took her in and cared for her during the last 18 months of her life.

That’s just heartbreaking. Poor pup.
People can be so awful. Years ago, my husband, a roommate, and I used to help out the local stray cats, doing TNR and fostering. One of our neighbors adopted two kittens, but when they moved a month later, instead of talking to us, they just tossed the kittens outside. They knew we fostered cats and even offered us leftover cat food but didn’t say a word about what they did with the kittens. We found one, but not the other. I’ll never understand how people can care so little.
Sadly, some people just don’t see animals as living creatures with feelings. They treat them like decorations or things they can get rid of when it’s inconvenient. I’ve seen people do terrible things to their pets, and it’s heartbreaking. It’s worse with cats because they’re often viewed as being independent and low-maintenance, but when the reality kicks in, people throw them away. And hunting dogs? Some treat them like tools they can dispose of after hunting season. It’s just so upsetting.
The world is full of cruel and evil people. It’s so depressing.
So many people do this, sadly.
I know, right? It’s just terrible.
I found out my latest rescue was literally thrown out of a moving car. He had a fracture, broken teeth, and road rash. It was heartbreaking to see.
