Why are my cousin's cats staring at me while I sleep

We discovered a stranger started squatting in our home. We decided to watch him for our safety. Are we overreacting?

They might be watching you because they know you are stressed but also know bugging you might not be welcome.

I had a friend’s cat try to suffocate me in my sleep once. I was sleeping off some alcohol on her couch and woke up choking because her cat was literally lying on my face. I was freaked out, obviously, because not only could I not breathe but I didn’t know how to get him off without him clawing my eyes out. I rolled over and sort of made him hop off. I went back to sleep, assuming he had been walking along the top of the couch and fallen on me or something. I don’t know how much later, I wake up with the motherfucker on my face again. I got him off, but I didn’t know what to do because every time I passed out he seemed to target my face. So I put a couch pillow over my head and he ended up sleeping on top of that. I had such a stiff neck in the morning.

Based on long experience, but this is just my opinion. They’re curious about you! In a positive or at least neutral way! You’ve been there a while so their initial curiosity has been sated, they more or less knew what to expect of you broadly speaking – you aren’t mean, you can touch them politely. But you had a moment earlier and they DID probably sense it, so now they’re probably curious again. A Change Has Occurred. Many cats are pretty emotionally observant and will react to people’s emotions in any number of surprising ways. Observing is a quintessentially feline reaction to anything and everything. As long as they aren’t skittering away or cringing when you move towards them, you can be pretty sure they aren’t scared. They will watch people they are concerned might pose a risk, but from the other behavior you describe, that just isn’t what is happening here. Keep in mind that as a species beautifully adapted to a dry environment, their lack of blinking reflects a nifty evolutionary advantage that protects their eyes with very thick tears, and not an inherently creepy or menacing nature. I have PTSD too, it can be rough, hope you’re doing better now.

@Harley
Thank you I’m doing good now! I will say the first day I was here they were running away but after some little butt and face rubs they don’t run anymore just kinda look at me or rub on me lol. I just got up for the bathroom and one cat was in a bed by the door and followed me back for a minute to chill then wandered off. They’re really weird and sweet but so is my cousin so it makes sense lmao.

@Glen
They do like you just fine! Rubbing on you is kind of like marking you as safe. And a bathroom escort is definitely a sign of…something. I’ll let you know when I figure out what, exactly. But definitely something important to them. Mysterious weirdos. (Mine wants me to turn the tub faucet on a little bit so he can slap the water around. Dork.)

You’re overthinking :thinking: and probably those cats don’t know you, but don’t worry cats being cats.

Sounds like they are checking to make sure you are ok, OP :slight_smile:

They are picking up on your stress and they are concerned. Don’t be surprised if you wake up snuggled with 2 kitties and a fresh outlook on life.
