What small animal would be best for me?

I’m a 16-year-old looking for a small pet. I’m responsible and have lived on a farm, so I know animals well. I’m not into reptiles, and since I’m homeschooled, I spend most of my time at home except for a couple of hours at the gym. I have a good space in my room for a horizontal cage and I’m open to letting the animal roam both indoors and outside.

Rats are fun! Definitely look into them.

They’re super social, though, so you need more than one for them to be healthy.

Seriously, rats are one of the best first pets. You can even train them. I got close with mine in college; she loved riding on my shoulder.

Guinea pigs are great too, but they can be loud. Ferrets are higher maintenance but can be very rewarding.

Rabbits are fun too! Just make sure to get one from a good source, as they can be a bit of a handful if not socialized well.

I had a couple of bunnies as a roommate. They were super chill and even slept in bed with her. Just be careful with cables around them.

Remember to consider the lifespan of different animals. At 16, your living situation might change a lot soon, so think about how your pet will fit into that.

I understand that, and I have plans. Thanks for the info!
