Hello guys, A lot of coyotes have been in our neighborhood this winter. I see them almost every day walking through people’s yards. They usually run away when you shout at them, but does anyone know how to stop them from coming into your yard? One was even lying in our backyard at 7pm and came back after I scared it away.
Keeping coyotes away from your yard can be tricky, but there are some methods you can try:
- Close up your garbage cans real tight so they can’t get in and sniff around for food.
- Don’t leave any pet food outside and pick up any food that falls from trees or plants.
- Try putting up lights or sprinklers that turn on when they sense movement. It might scare the coyotes away.
- Use stuff that makes loud noises or plays sounds of mean animals to scare them off.
- Build a strong fence around your yard, making sure it goes down into the ground too so they can’t dig underneath.
- Keep your little pets indoors, especially when it’s getting dark or light out because that’s when coyotes like to come around.
- Some folks say strong-smelling things like ammonia or citrus can keep coyotes away, so you could give that a shot too.
Just keep doing it and be consistent, and hopefully, those coyotes will stop coming around.
Also, it’s essential to understand coyote behavior to effectively deter them from your yard. Coyotes are typically attracted to areas where they can find food, water, and shelter, so removing these attractants can significantly reduce their presence. Additionally, coyotes are intelligent and adaptable animals, so it may require a combination of methods to discourage them from returning. Consider implementing the following strategies in conjunction with the ones mentioned earlier: Close up your garbage cans real tight so they can’t get in and sniff around for food. Also, remove shelter and hiding spots by trimming back overgrown vegetation and clearing away brush piles. Secure compost and bird feeders to prevent attracting coyotes. Install motion-activated alarms or deterrent devices that emit high-frequency sounds to startle coyotes. Use natural deterrents like predator urine or thorny bushes to make your yard less appealing. Coordinate with neighbors for community efforts to address coyote activity collectively. Remember that persistence and consistency are key when dealing with coyote deterrence, and if the problem persists, contact local wildlife authorities for further guidance and assistance.
