I have two cats who have always been well cared for and have had all the food they need. However, I lost my job in May, and now money is so tight that I’m falling behind on almost all my bills. I’ve been prioritizing feeding my cats over myself, but I’ve reached a point where I can’t afford to feed any of us. I’ve reached out to several shelters, but they didn’t have any supplies available for me to pick up, and now with the holiday weekend, they’re all closed. Does anyone have any other suggestions I might not have thought of? I’m open to any and all advice right now.

Also, if your city has a food pantry, there could be litter.
Worst case scenario, rip the oaper and collect sand or dirt from outside.
Borrow some money from family and ask to pay one bill later.
Call and ask a rescue or humane society near you, they often get extra donations
If you’re struggling to afford food for your cats, here are some steps you can take:
- Reach Out to Local Animal Shelters or Rescue Organizations: Many have programs to assist pet owners in need or can direct you to local resources.
- Contact Your Vet: Some veterinary clinics offer pet food assistance or can refer you to local charities or organizations.
- Check Food Banks: Some food banks and community centers provide pet food assistance.
- Explore Online Communities: Look for local Facebook groups or forums where pet owners exchange or donate pet food.
- Consider Temporary Foster Care: Reach out to local animal rescue groups to see if they offer short-term foster care while you get back on your feet.
- Look for Discounts or Coupons: Sometimes, pet food companies offer promotions or discounts.
- Homemade Options: If necessary, consult with your vet about safe, homemade meal options for your cats.
- Barter or Trade: Offer services or items you can provide in exchange for pet food.
Taking these steps can help you find temporary solutions until your situation improves.
