Hello! I have a 5-year-old mixed breed dog (21kg, female, Rottweiler X Pug/Jack Russell). I’ve had her since she was a puppy, and she’s had no previous health issues. About 6 months ago, I noticed she would bump into things like door frames and stairs. The vet checked her out and said she seemed fine but wanted to see her again later. A few days ago, the vet told me her eyes are getting worse slowly, and she may go blind. I’m really worried about her… any advice on how to cope?
My 11yo diabetic mini schnauzer went blind overnight. It was tough at first, but she adapted well. I talked to her a lot and kept obstacles clear. After about 4 weeks, she was exploring the garden off-leash and seemed happy. Dogs really rely on their sense of smell, and she got used to her new way of navigating. It’s heartbreaking, but she’ll find her way.

Thank you for sharing your experience… it helps to know others have been through this.
You might consider getting a halo that helps prevent bumps. High-contrast mats can signal where she is, and different textures can help her navigate. Keeping furniture in the same place is crucial too. Dogs adapt, and it’s all about making her feel safe.

Those are great ideas! I’ll definitely try some of those out. Thanks!
My beagle slowly went blind too. He didn’t slow down much because he always followed his nose. We kept our house set up the same to help him navigate. Just be there for her and guide her. She’ll adjust!
@Palmer
That makes sense! I’ll make sure to keep things consistent for her. Thank you!
