Thinking of adopting an incontinent cat... advice needed?

Hi guys, I’m contemplating adopting an incontinent tripod cat and could use some advice. I met this sweet kitty while looking for a friend for my current cat. She wouldn’t leave my lap, and I fell in love with her. Unfortunately, I can’t stop thinking about her situation. She came from Kuwait and has been abandoned twice here in the U.S.

Here’s my situation: I’m a senior college student in an apartment and will be moving this summer. I haven’t found a job yet, but I’m close to getting full-time offers. My boyfriend and family don’t support me adopting a disabled cat, and since my boyfriend and I travel long distances, it’s hard to find someone to care for her when I’m gone for weekends.

Her situation is tough too. She’s incontinent, dribbles pee often, needs to be expressed, and takes five medications twice daily. This means more vet visits, and I’m worried about the costs. She’s been in the shelter for a month and a half now, and I just want to give her a better life, but I’m scared.

I love her, but I’m also anxious and ambitious, and I fear taking on such a big responsibility right before entering the adult world. What do you all think? Should I go for it or hold off?

Honestly, I don’t think you’re in a position to care for a disabled cat full-time right now.

This cat has health issues, and you might not be able to afford the care she needs. It sounds like you’re too busy for this kind of commitment right now.

I really admire your empathy for this cat, but you don’t have the resources or time to provide for her needs. You’d be spending several hours a day just cleaning up after her, and that could impact your living situation and job prospects.

You seem like a really kind person, but this cat’s needs are more than you can give right now. Vet bills alone could become overwhelming. Maybe focus on getting settled into a job first, and if she’s still there later, reconsider then.

As someone with multiple cats, including some with special needs, I can say it might be a lot for you right now. But if you’re really passionate about making it work, you could get creative with spaces and routines. Just make sure you’re ready for the commitment!
