Hi y’all! I’d like to start a discussion about squishy face breeds like pugs and bulldogs. Did you know bulldogs cannot naturally breed? They need fertility treatments and C-sections due to complications. This raises questions about their quality of life and the responsibilities of breeding. My parents have bred bulldogs for years but decided to stop, and I support that. What do you think? Any experiences or insights?
Brachycephalic breeds, especially French bulldogs, are very prone to herniated discs and brain cancer (gliomas).
My parents’ Frenchie has a lot of health issues at just 2 years old, including knee problems and gastro issues. It’s sad how unhealthy they can be.
I just learned about herniated discs from you. It makes sense why these breeds suffer so much.
We adopted an English bulldog abandoned by a breeder. She had multiple health issues and was terrified of everything. It’s heartbreaking, but I love her.
I knew squished-face dogs have breathing issues. I think we should stop breeding them due to their health problems.
I always wanted a pug, but now I just think about their suffering.
I know about the issues with brachy breeds. It’s hard to see people admire them without acknowledging their suffering.
I’ve worked with a pug rescue and while they have health issues, my pugs were active and happy until old age. I do think breeding practices need to change.
As someone who went through vet school, I can confirm that squish-faced breeds have a much higher risk of complications during routine surgeries.
We rescued a bulldog from an abusive breeder. He has many health issues, but we’re committed to giving him a happy life.
My pug mix has some breathing issues and allergies. We’re trying to figure out his skin problems now.
I have a Beabull (Beagle-Bulldog mix) who is gentle and healthy at 6 years old. Mixed breeds seem to have fewer health issues.
