Really tough decision with my cat, need some advice

Hey guys, I am struggling right now and could use some advice. I recently had to take my cat to the vet because he seemed extra tired. The vet said he was dehydrated and his gums looked pale. They sent me to the emergency vet, and there I was told he’s got low red blood cells, his platelets are low, and his liver isn’t doing well. The ER vet thinks it might be cancer.

They want to run some tests that cost over $6,000, and if it is cancer, the treatment would be over $10,000, which I just can’t afford. For now, I decided to let him stay overnight at the vet, get some fluids, and have a blood transfusion. I know the transfusion is just a temporary fix, but I need a little more time to figure out what to do next. He’s 8 years old, and I don’t think I would put him through cancer treatments even if I had the money, but the thought of putting him down breaks my heart. I thought I had more time with him, and this whole thing has just crushed me. Please, any advice would help me right now.

Spend as much time with him as you can, give him all the love and say goodbye. I went through this with my dog, and we did the chemo route. I wouldn’t do it again.

I’m so sorry you went through that, thank you for sharing. It’s comforting to hear your perspective.

Honestly, if you can’t afford the treatment, you might want to let him go. Even if you could, the treatments can be really hard on them and may not even help.

I would suggest getting another opinion, maybe even a third one.

I’d give him peace and let him go. It’s the kindest thing you can do at this point. Sending you big hugs.

At 8 years old, chemo might end up doing more harm than good. It could affect both his quality of life and your own.
