Rabbits and Guinea Pigs Together?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here had experience keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together? I have a rabbit that freely roams the house and does not like being confined. I am considering getting a guinea pig for my niece, who loves them but can only have fish in her apartment. I would like to be able to bring the guinea pig out when she visits, but I’m concerned about potential issues between the rabbit and the guinea pig. The rabbit is usually calm but does chase flies and bugs, which makes me worry. Any advice?

Introducing rabbits and guinea pigs to each other can be tricky. While some pets may learn to coexist peacefully, it’s crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals.

Potential Issues

  • Predatory Behavior: Rabbits are prey animals and might perceive guinea pigs as potential prey, especially when excited.
  • Territoriality: Both rabbits and guinea pigs can exhibit territorial behavior, leading to aggression or dominance disputes.
  • Disease Transmission: Although rare, there is a risk of disease transmission between different species.

Cautious Introduction

If you decide to introduce the animals, follow these steps:

  1. Separate Spaces: Start by keeping the rabbit and guinea pig in separate, enclosed areas to let them get used to each other’s scents.
  2. Gradual Introductions: Allow short, supervised interactions in a neutral space to help them become accustomed to each other without feeling threatened.
  3. Close Monitoring: Always supervise their interactions closely. If you notice any signs of aggression or discomfort, separate them immediately.

Alternative Solutions

  • Separate Playtime: Set up a designated play area for the guinea pig during your niece’s visit to prevent conflicts.
  • Consider Other Pets: If you’re looking for a small companion, other options like hamsters, gerbils, or birds might be suitable alternatives.

Remember

The safety and well-being of your pets should always come first. Be ready to separate the animals if needed to ensure their comfort and health.

You can keep guinea pigs and rabbits in the same building, but they shouldn’t share the same space. Dedicate a separate room for the guinea pigs, making it a no-bunny zone. Guinea pigs are social and should have a pair, and they’re not low-maintenance pets. Don’t get them just for a family member; they require proper care.

Rabbits and guinea pigs have different needs and behaviors, making it generally not advisable to house them together. Some of the key considerations include; Dietry needs, Health concerns and behavior. While some people have had success keeping them together, it’s generally recommended to house rabbits with other rabbits and guinea pigs with other guinea pigs. If you do decide to keep them together, careful supervision and a proper understanding of their needs are essential.
