Pet insurance Canada: Fetch vs Furkin vs Trupanion

Hi fam,

New pet parent here. Just adopted a rescue kelpie mix and looking for pet insurance. Noobie here, but I find Trupanion very expensive, and I’m reading mixed reviews for Fetch and Furkin.

Basically looking for guidance from existing users of these companies on:

  • Monthly cost
  • Coverage (regular check-up fees, dental, etc.)
  • Ease of reimbursements and claims
  • Overall experience
  • Extra perks

Thank you in advance

I went with Fetch. Trupanion was 3-4x the cost of any other provider I got a quote from, and I don’t need direct billing. I think Trupanion’s rates vary by breed and location, but I wasn’t about to spend $200+/month for a young dog.

I have a $500 annual deductible and 80% reimbursement. I pay quarterly for a discount, which ends up being a little over $600/year. My plan renews in January, and my premium only went up like $5/month.

There’s a general wellness plan option, but I haven’t looked into it since I don’t plan to use it. My plan covers medical conditions, injuries, emergencies, and I believe dental emergencies are included, but not routine care. I haven’t had any issues with claims; they usually get approved quickly. A $2k+ hospital claim was paid within 48 hours. Just make sure to get a wellness checkup and submit the vet notes from that appointment to avoid issues with claims. Overall, I’m satisfied with Fetch, and my premiums and coverage seem competitive with other providers.

I have Furkin and so far, it’s been great. Monthly costs are reasonable, and they cover a lot of services. I had a minor claim and it was super easy to submit. They even have a chat feature for questions, which is nice!

That sounds promising! What kind of coverage do you have with Furkin?

I have their basic plan, which covers emergencies, some dental, and regular check-ups. I feel like it’s a good balance of cost and coverage.

I’ve also heard that Fetch has good reviews. It seems like they’re pretty reliable for claims. Just make sure to read the fine print for any limitations!

I went with Trupanion because they cover a lot of stuff, but yeah, it can get pricey. Their direct billing is convenient, but you pay for it. I think it really depends on what you want most in coverage.

I’ve been using Fetch for a couple of years and I love it! They cover a lot, and I’ve had no issues with claims. Plus, their customer service has always been helpful when I had questions.
