Need small pet suggestions for mental health

I’m feeling really depressed and at 16, I’m looking for some pet suggestions. I live in India, and my parents are against getting dogs or cats. I’ve already tried keeping guinea pigs, but after three months, my parents said they had to take them away because they made the room smell. Other than that, I haven’t had any pets. My parents also said no to big pets, so I’m looking for something small that I can hold in my hands. I want something easy to care for, with no special needs and not too much work or cost. Ideally, I can spend about $50 per month on this pet. I can’t import any animals, so it needs to be something that’s available in India. I just want a pet I can hug whenever I want. My parents don’t seem to care about my mental health, so I’m trying to take this into my own hands. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

It sounds like you’re in a tough situation. Have you considered that every pet requires some level of care and costs? If you can’t afford vet bills or maintenance, it might not be the right time for a pet.

@Callen
I understand that, but I really feel like having a pet could help me.

What about volunteering with animals instead? You could help at a shelter or feed strays. It’s a way to be around animals without the responsibilities of ownership.

That sounds like a good idea. I might look into local shelters to help out.

Honestly, if your parents took your guinea pigs away, I doubt they’ll let you keep a different pet. It might be better to wait until you can live on your own.

I get that, but I really want something to care for right now.

Have you thought about small rodents like hamsters or fancy rats? They are usually low-maintenance and can be quite affectionate.

I’ve heard about rats, but I’m worried they might smell.

@Flynn
They can smell, especially if their cage isn’t cleaned regularly. You’d need to stay on top of that.

If you’re looking for something really low-maintenance, maybe consider a pet snail. They’re small and don’t require much care at all.

What type of snail would be best to keep at home?

@Flynn
Garden snails are pretty common and easy to take care of. Just make sure you give them a suitable habitat.

I really think you should wait until you’re older and can make your own decisions about pets. It’s a big responsibility and sometimes they can add stress instead of relieving it.

I appreciate the concern, but I feel like having something to care for could help my situation.
