Hi everyone, I’m reaching out for help. My 14-year-old mixed-breed dog was diagnosed with kidney failure in July. He was eating okay until September, but now he’s completely refusing food. We’ve tried cooking different meals and even hand-feeding him, but he mostly just spits it out. We started using MIRATAZ Ointment, which worked for a little while, but he’s stopped eating again. He’s lost a lot of weight—now down to about 5.6 kg (12.3 lbs)—and while he’s still reactive and enjoys short walks, it breaks my heart to see him like this. The vet says this is our last chance with IV fluids, but I’m looking for any other suggestions or experiences from others. Thank you!
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. Have you tried different types of food, maybe something really smelly or wet food? Sometimes that can tempt them to eat.

Yeah, we’ve tried wet food too, but he just turns away. It’s so frustrating.
It’s tough seeing them like this. Have you looked into appetite stimulants? Sometimes they can help jumpstart their interest in food.

I’ll ask the vet about that. We’re running out of options.

My dog went through something similar. We found that warming up the food helped a lot! It might bring out the smell more.
That’s a great idea! I’ll definitely try warming it up.
I know this is hard, but sometimes dogs respond well to a little bit of baby food (just check the ingredients). It can be easier for them to eat when they’re feeling off.

I hadn’t thought of that! I’ll give it a shot. Thanks!
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. You’re doing everything you can. Just keep loving him and stay close. Sometimes their spirits can help them heal.

Thank you for the support. It really helps to hear that.
