Looking for a low prey drive dog... any suggestions?

Hey guys, I need some help finding a dog breed with a low prey drive that would enjoy hiking and is least likely to hurt cats or small dogs. I grew up with a bunch of different breeds, but my experience is a bit hazy. We had a Jack Russell, a Bully Pit, and even a Husky for a bit.

I’ve always rescued dogs, but I’m not sure I can find a truly cat-friendly dog at a shelter. My ideal dog would be a couch potato with me but also ready to hit the trails on weekends. I’m flexible in size, but I prefer short-haired breeds since I’ll be taking them hiking. I can give them a lot of attention and exercise, but I want to avoid any high prey drive or aggression towards other animals. Any recommendations?

You might want to consider a Labrador or a Golden Retriever. They’re super friendly and usually get along well with other pets.

I agree with the Labs! They’re also great for hiking and very trainable. Plus, they tend to be good with kids.

How about a Boxer? I have one with low prey drive, and she’s super relaxed around my cats. Just check with the breeder about their temperament.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels might be a good fit too! They’re generally friendly and get along well with other pets. Just be careful about health issues.

Shetland Sheepdogs could also be a good option. They’re smart and trainable, plus they usually do well with other animals.
