Hey all, I just found out this past Friday that both of my indoor cats have fleas. They’ve never been outside, not even on the patio, so I’m guessing my husband or I brought them in somehow. Since then, we’ve been tackling the issue by:
Treating both cats with Frontline
Using a flea comb on them every other day (3 times so far) and drowning the fleas in alcohol
Washing bedding and their blankets daily
Vacuuming the entire house and upholstery every day
Spraying the house twice with Pet Armor Flea & Tick Home Spray
We’re planning to use an outdoor treatment tomorrow
I’ve already noticed a lot less flea dirt, but I’m wondering if there’s anything else we should be doing? We’re renting a carpet shampooer on Friday, so any recommendations on what shampoo to use would be awesome. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hey! You might want to consider using flea bombs. You’ll need to take your cats out of the house for a while, but it can be super effective. We had the same issue, and it worked like a charm. Just place one in each room, and if possible, put extras under furniture like beds or sofas. Also, I use Frontline on my shoes when I go hiking to avoid bringing fleas back into the house!
Here’s an alternative that worked for me without using chemicals: cover your carpets with a plastic sheet and then put temporary carpets on top. Cover your beds and chairs with plastic, and bag up your clothes. Fleas need an animal’s den to survive, so if you clean everything for a couple of weeks, they won’t be able to breed.
Sounds like you’re doing all the right things! Make sure to keep vacuuming daily, especially around baseboards and under furniture where fleas love to hide. Also, when you shampoo the carpets, use a flea-specific carpet cleaner—those work really well for deeper cleaning.
It sounds like you’re already being super thorough! One thing to keep in mind is that flea eggs can fall into cracks and tiny crevices, so vacuuming every day is key for a while. You can also sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth on carpets and upholstery—it’s a natural remedy that kills fleas by dehydrating them. Just make sure it’s safe for pets and vacuum it up after a couple of hours.
