I’m currently taking care of my friend’s cat, and I find myself in a bit of a dilemma. I feel incapable of leaving him alone because he looks so sad, and honestly, it really rips my soul to shreds seeing him like that. I am reaching out because I need some ideas on what I should do to help him feel more comfortable when I need to step away.
You could try playing with him, giving him some treats, or perhaps throwing a little ball around for him. If he enjoys being brushed or combed, that might also help. I’ve found that watching Jackson Galaxy on YouTube can provide some useful tips on how to engage with cats effectively.

The challenge I have right now is that it’s 1 in the morning, and I’ve been playing with him all day. I really need some sleep, but I feel guilty leaving him alone.
In situations like this, it can sometimes be best to just ignore him for a bit. Cats are pretty good at finding their own entertainment or just settling down to sleep. I have a very social and needy cat myself, and I’ve learned that sometimes you just have to stop giving them attention or you might end up feeling overwhelmed.
@Morgan
That definitely makes sense. I understand the need to step back, but it feels tough to just walk away when he looks so forlorn.
If it would make you feel better, consider leaving the TV on for him. The background noise might help him feel a bit more at ease, especially if you find a YouTube video featuring birds or something like that.
@Bliss
I completely agree with that suggestion. You can search for ‘Cat TV’ on YouTube. There are videos that last for about 8 hours, which could keep him entertained while you get some much-needed rest.
Honestly, you should just go to sleep. He will be fine, and I promise you he will eventually settle down. Cats can adapt quickly once they realize everything is okay.

I really hope you’re right about that. It’s just hard to shake off the worry when he seems so sad.
Have you considered whether he actually looks sad, or if you might be interpreting his expressions through a human lens? Cats don’t express emotions in the same way we do, so it’s possible he’s just being his usual self.
@Zenith
That’s a really good point. I might be projecting my feelings onto him. He does seem to have a different demeanor than when he’s with his owner.
It’s possible that he thinks he has been abandoned. A good idea could be to FaceTime your friend and let them talk to him. It might help reassure him that he’s not alone and that everything is fine, even though he’s in a different environment.
@Val
That sounds like a great idea. I will definitely try that approach. It might help him feel more secure.
