Spent my entire childhood being afraid of dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats. We were a fish household pretty much lol. I would actively distance myself from dogs in any situation. Nowadays, I’m indifferent to their presence but want to learn how to treat animals better. I see people interact with animals confidently, and I want to be kinder when I meet them. How do you go about that?
Start by approaching animals calmly and confidently. Avoid sudden movements and allow them to come to you.
Learn about animal body language! Understanding what they’re communicating can help you respond appropriately.
Treat them with kindness, and always ask the owner if it’s okay to pet their dog or cat. Respect their space!
Try volunteering at a local animal shelter. It’s a great way to learn how to interact with different animals and build your confidence.
When meeting a new dog, let them sniff you first. This is a friendly gesture that helps build trust.
Speak softly and gently to animals. They respond well to calm voices and positive energy.
Spend time observing how others interact with animals. You can pick up tips and techniques just by watching.
Consider taking a class on animal behavior or handling. It can really help you understand them better.
Always carry treats when you meet a dog. It helps create a positive association and can break the ice!
