How to care for a starving gecko?

A few days ago I saw a gecko running across my floor, and while I tried to catch it, the gecko disappeared underneath the couch and I eventually gave up. Fast forward to now, I just got home from work and found it again. It was alive but very emaciated in the middle of the floor. I put a little plastic cup over it, thinking I was being quick, but it’s barely moving. I put it outside, but it’s still hardly moving. Can I give it some water and food somehow? It’s very small, so I’m afraid it might drown if I put too much water near it.

Is it a wild gecko? If so, GENTLY pick it up and put it outside. Try placing it under a leaf or somewhere it can hide. It might just be in shock and could recover once it’s outside and safe.

Unfortunately, it passed away. It stayed alive just long enough to die in front of me.

I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s tough with wild animals, especially when they’ve been weakened. At least now you know what to do if you ever encounter this situation again.

Yeah, it’s really sad. It almost looked like it had been trying to eat the carpet. I’ll definitely try harder to find it next time.

Next time, if you find a dehydrated or starving gecko, you can put some water on a shallow plate for it. For food, you could try looking up species-specific care advice on a gecko forum, like r/geckos. They’ll probably have more tips for taking care of geckos in that condition.
