I have a 10-12 week old kitten. I like to lie on my bed and browse my laptop, but the kitten constantly climbs on my keyboard. Every time I remove it, it jumps back on, and this goes on forever. It doesn’t just want to lay beside me or on my lap, it’s obsessed with the keyboard. It’s cute but also frustrating because I can’t get anything done. Any advice?
Haha, your keyboard? You’re new to this, huh?
Kittens love warmth. Laptops get warm, so naturally, your kitten is drawn to it. Try putting a heating pad nearby, and they might lay there instead.
Your keyboard has two things your kitten loves: warmth and your attention. Maybe set up a decoy keyboard or something less comfy? Let her claim that instead.

I’m not sure it’s about warmth. It happens even when I’m using an external keyboard.
@Reagan
It’s about attention. The kitten sees that you’re focused on the keyboard, so it wants to be there to get your attention. Smart little thing!
@Quincy
Exactly, reward her for sitting where you want her to.
The truth is… it’s not your keyboard anymore, it’s hers. You’re in her domain now. Welcome to life with a kitten.

Haha, can confirm! I have two overlords and one overlady. Good luck!
Simple solution: you can’t stop her!
I usually brush my cat, and she’ll get off the keyboard. She hates being brushed! Also, try a pet heating pad to lure her away.
Maybe try a decoy keyboard? Or a bigger desk with room for her to sit.
Sounds like the kitten just wants your attention. Try giving her more playtime so she’ll be a bit calmer when you’re working.

I’ve tried putting her on my lap, my belly, or beside me, but she always goes back to the keyboard. She’s persistent!
@Reagan
A decoy keyboard could help! Maybe put one nearby and let her ‘own’ that one?
@Reagan
Or maybe more interactive play could tire her out. Sometimes kittens just have a lot of energy!
I got a little mat for my cat next to the keyboard. After some training, she started using it.
Just stop working, problem solved.

Cats love mimicking what their humans do. If you’re typing away, they wanna get in on the action too. Try training her to sit on your lap instead of the keyboard by moving her there every time. Worked for me after a LOT of patience.
