Has Anyone Successfully Traveled with a Cat in Cargo on a 24hr International Flight?

Hi there! I’m planning to travel with my cat from Seattle, US to Jakarta, Indonesia. I booked tickets with ANA Airlines, and unfortunately, they only allow pets in the cargo hold. I’m very anxious and scared for her health in cargo, especially since I’ve heard some horror stories. The total travel time will be 23 hours and 20 minutes, including a layover. Here’s the itinerary:

  • Seattle to Tokyo: 10 hrs 35 mins
  • Layover in Tokyo: 4 hrs 50 mins
  • Tokyo to Jakarta: 7 hrs 55 mins

My cat is young and healthy but gets scared easily. Has anyone had a similar experience traveling with their pet in cargo on long international flights with a layover? Especially with ANA air? If so, do you have any tips or advice? Do I have other options? I’ve considered pet relocation services but they are super pricey. Thank you so much in advance!

If you’ve heard the horror stories, I can’t imagine why you would still consider doing this to your cat. Look for another airline that allows pets in the cabin.

My cats are my babies, but I would definitely find them new homes over a 24-hour flight in a cargo hold.

Please do not do this. Cargo is horrible enough, let alone for 24 hours. That cannot be good for your poor baby.

This sounds like a really bad idea. I would not do it.

If you really care about your cat, don’t do this.

If you have to do this, I would break up your itinerary. Maybe stay over in Tokyo to take care of your cat.

That’s a good point. You won’t have access to your cat between flights, which makes it even riskier.

Find an airline that allows them in the cabin or pay a pet relocation company. Cargo is incredibly traumatizing for animals.

This is a terrible idea. You chose an airline that doesn’t allow pets in the cabin, so reconsider your options.

I flew my dog in cargo for about 20-22 hours. While it’s different for cats, I can offer some tips. Just avoid sedatives!
