My cat started throwing up on Tuesday morning, so I took her to the vet. She was given a shot of Cerenia, and I was prescribed a tablet version to give her a 1/4 dose every 24 hours. All the tests, including X-rays and blood work, came back completely normal. Yesterday, she seemed to regain some of her appetite, but after giving her the third dose of Cerenia, she completely stopped eating.
She seems to be feeling nauseous, has lost her appetite, and has started drooling.
We’re doing our best to care for her, but I’m curious if anyone else has experienced similar issues with their pets after multiple doses of Cerenia?
Update: My cat has started eating the recommended amount and drinking more water. I plan to talk to the vet on Tuesday, but she seems to be improving.
It’s possible that the underlying issue hasn’t been fully resolved, and Cerenia alone might not be enough to treat your cat. I would recommend taking her back to the vet.
Yeah, that’s the plan. Her blood work, urine test, and X-ray all came back clear, so the vet suspects it might be a bowel issue. Unfortunately, I have to wait until Tuesday to see the local vet due to the Thanksgiving holiday. If things get worse, I’ll definitely take her to the emergency vet.
I’ve had multiple cats on Cerenia for several days to even weeks without any issues.
I agree with the other commenter that the underlying problem might still be there.
You could ask your vet about appetite stimulants like mirtazapine or Elura to help until they figure out what’s going on. It’s not good for cats to go several days without eating.
Thankfully, she started eating around 3:30 this afternoon and managed to eat about a quarter of a cup of food. I spoke with the vet tech yesterday, and they assured me that as long as she’s eating even a little, I shouldn’t worry too much until she can be seen on Tuesday. (Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving, so the local vet is closed.)
I don’t doubt that it probably isn’t the issue. I’m just asking because I’m a first-time cat owner and was curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.
Drooling is listed as a side effect of Cerenia, I give it to my dog but have no experience with giving it to cats. I would say contact your vet to be safe and see if you should continue giving the medication or not.
yea drooling and loss of appetite were what drew my attention mostly. She did start eating and has been positively drinking water as of the past few hours.
