Heyguys, I found a kitten and the vet thinks she has food allergies. She’s on a hypoallergenic diet now, but it’s tough seeing her uncomfortable. Do you know non-drug treatments to relieve her itching/discomfort, or should I wait for the hypoallergenic diet to work? The vet said it would take at least 30 days.
My cat has food allergies, and we experienced the same thing. I would give the diet time, but in the meantime, you may try wiping her down with a cool, moist cloth to reduce the itching. Consider adding omega fatty acids to her food with the vet’s clearance; they improved my cat’s coat health tremendously. Good luck, it’s awful to see them uncomfortable.
To be honest, the wait is unpleasant, but once the diet begins to work, you will be relieved. Meanwhile, I’ve heard that coconut oil is beneficial for itchy skin (a small amount rubbed into the affected areas). Of course, consult your vet beforehand. Brushing on a regular basis can also assist disperse the skin’s natural oils and make her feel more comfortable.
I have been there with my little child, and waiting for results is very frustrating. Meanwhile, I soothed his skin using an oatmeal-based pet shampoo (which had been recommended by the vet). You can also try utilizing an air filter to see if anything in the house is causing her discomfort. Sending positive vibes for the diet to kick in soon.
Poor thing! My pet experienced something similar, and I felt helpless. Aside from the food, I discovered that omega-3 supplements (designed specifically for cats) greatly improved his skin and fur health. You could ask your veterinarian if it’s safe to attempt. Otherwise, give the hypo diet some time to do its magic.
I’ve experienced this with my cat! It is awful to see them constantly itching. One thing that helped was using unscented baby wipes to clean her fur carefully in case allergens were on the surface. You might also try adding a humidifier to the room, as dry air can aggravate skin conditions. However, my cat’s hypoallergenic diet took a few weeks to take effect. Continue to be patient.
