Can someone take a cat back?

So I decided to live with my friend a little over a year ago. We got a new apartment together and she brought her cat with her and I brought mine. The lease was for 14 months, and I took care of both cats for the majority of this time. At first, we kept them in separate rooms to help them get used to each other. My friend would forget to give water to her cat and was feeding her by leaving out a dry feeder. I suggested providing measured amounts of food to prevent health complications, but she was annoyed by this because it involved taking care of her cat. We agreed that I would feed both cats, and I had no issue with this because I wanted them to be healthy. However, we never discussed cleaning the litter boxes. I cleaned both at least twice a week while she rarely cleaned her cat’s box.

An agreement was in place that you were keeping both cats and she left? Nope. Block her and forget about her.

It’s your cat to keep, love and spoil.

Legally, she might have some standing unless you have the agreement in writing. Have you taken the cat to the vet? If she has a microchip with her information, it’ll be tricky. But no, you shouldn’t give the cat back unless you are forced to.

I have not taken the cat to the vet yet, but she is due for her annual vaccines soon. Should I get her microchipped?

Yes, get her microchipped! Vet records and a microchip in your name means you’re the legal owner.

It’s been over the abandonment period, so she legally abandoned her cat. Just microchip the pet and keep vet records. If she wants to take you to court over it, she can, but you have proof of caring for the pet.

Most regulations would say the cat is yours at this point. Make sure to save any texts or receipts related to the cat.

No. It’s your cat now and you know the cat will be neglected. Don’t give it back.
