I have been thinking about getting an easy pet to live in a tank or enclosure in my apartment, but I’m not sure what would be best. Initially, I thought about getting fish, but I’d like something I can cuddle with, too. A friend suggested a bearded dragon or lizard. Are there any other renter-friendly, easy, and affordable pets that I can start with?
Just a heads up as an exotic vet—if you’re thinking it’ll be cheap, you might be surprised. The initial cost for setting up an enclosure can be quite high, and cutting corners will likely result in vet bills or a low-quality life for your pet. A hamster might fit your criteria, but keep in mind that even small pets come with costs.

I agree. As someone who keeps reptiles and tanks, I wouldn’t recommend them for a first-time pet owner. They require a lot of maintenance and care.

Hamsters need more care than most people expect. They require space, proper care, and aren’t very cuddly. For first-time pet owners, rats or guinea pigs might be a better choice. But definitely do your research before deciding.
Rats are a good option. They’re smart, social, and can be quite cuddly. Just keep in mind that they need exercise and time out of their cage. They also have a short lifespan, which can be tough.
Isopods are super easy and cheap pets! They don’t cuddle, but they’re fascinating and low-maintenance.
Cats are always a good option. I tried keeping fish, but the maintenance was harder than I expected. Some people also enjoy keeping jumping spiders as pets—those are becoming pretty popular.
I love rabbits, but they can be more expensive to care for than you might expect, and they can be destructive if not supervised.
Fish, lizards, and snakes can be expensive upfront and to maintain. Exotic vet care is also pricey, and reptiles have very specific needs for heat, UV lighting, and nutrition. Do you have a monthly budget for pet care? And savings for unexpected vet bills?
Rabbits can be nice pets, but they’re not necessarily low-maintenance. Bearded dragons are great, but they’re not exactly cuddly. And fish… well, you won’t be cuddling with those anytime soon!

Actually, bunnies are NOT low-maintenance at all, which is why so many end up in shelters.

Rabbits are way more work than people realize. They need space, attention, fresh food, and proper bedding. Plus, they should be kept in pairs, which adds to the responsibility. It’s worth researching thoroughly before deciding on one.
