Anyone gotten a license for breeding chipmunks in the US?

So, I know my state’s laws when it comes to owning chipmunks, and it’s pretty straightforward. You need a cheap license if you want to sell them after breeding. Has anyone here gone through the process of getting a license for breeding chipmunks or similar animals? How hard was it, and how long did it take? Trying to get a sense of what to expect.

I had to get a license to breed native species in Ohio. It was pretty easy—just called the wildlife department, filled out the paperwork, and gave them the permit numbers of where I got the animals. After paying a $40 fee, they came to inspect within a week and sent me the permit a week after that. The whole thing wasn’t too complicated.

That doesn’t sound too bad at all. I might have to give them a call and see what the process is in my state.

There aren’t any federal laws for breeding non-threatened species like chipmunks. It all depends on your state. You’ll want to check with your local fish and wildlife department for the specifics.

Good to know it varies by state. I’ll reach out to the wildlife department here and see what they say.
