Am I wrong for taking someone’s dog?

My aunt has a small Maltese dog that she doesn’t take care of. He’s got fleas, barely gets fed, his hair is matted, and he sleeps outside. The other day I saw her son throwing him into the pool over and over. The poor dog is terrified of everyone and shakes a lot. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I took him. Could I get in trouble for this?

Honestly, I wouldn’t tell anyone. Just take him to the vet, get him microchipped, and give him a good grooming. After that, no one will recognize him lol. And if your aunt keeps him outside, she might not even notice he’s gone.

Yeah, definitely a pro-level r/UnethicalLifeProTip here. Even if it’s not legal, it’s the right thing to do for the dog.

Exactly, I mean it’s not technically legal, but it’s totally the humane thing to do in this situation.

@Lyric
For sure. OP’s got the moral high ground here. Just don’t go posting this everywhere lol.

Depending on where you live, this could be a felony. I’d think about deleting this post just to be safe.

You’re doing the right thing. Take him to the vet for a checkup and ask them to document his condition. Take photos of how he looks now too, so you have proof in case anything happens.

Good idea! I’m definitely going to take him to the vet soon.

You should rename him too! A fresh start for him, you know? I doubt your aunt will even care that he’s gone if she treats him that badly.

Totally agree, new name, new life! That dog deserves so much better.

Just tell people he’s a rescue. You can say you adopted him or something, no one needs to know the full story. Maltese dogs kinda all look the same anyway.

Yeah, especially if he’s purebred. You can just say you always wanted one and found one to rescue.

Not sure about the legal stuff, but morally you’re in the clear. If your aunt didn’t care for him, someone had to step in.

Totally. If it ever came down to it, you could report her for neglect before she reports you for anything.
