ADVICE - What can I safely feed my cats until payday?

Hello guys, I am seeking any advise on what human food to feed my two cats until payday. This month has been difficult for me because of unanticipated bills, fewer hours at work last month, and other factors. I don’t have much food, yet they always eat first. So any tips on what I may safely feed them would be greatly appreciated.

If you are in the US, make a post on Nextdoor. A neighbor may be willing to drop off cat food asap.

I’m in the United Kingdom, unfortunately.

I’m also in the United Kingdom, so you might want to look for a local Facebook cat or pet community. There is an active dog in my town! Alternatively, your local food bank may offer cat food, and you can acquire some stuff for yourself as well!!

Maybe try Olio, local Facebook groups, and local shelters. I think cat or dog owners are almost always happy to help if they can .

High protein foods such as chicken (unseasoned) should be fine, although I believe chicken breasts are more expensive than a few cans of wet food. However, you may boil some chicken breasts and feed them to them for a few days; they can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days, with a breast every day depending on their size. This is similar to the “I can’t feed my cats cat food” argument, although I believe it is still expensive. Sorry if that wasn’t helpful .

Chicken thighs are better, a few more calories and fat. A 10 lb bag of chicken thighs is under 10 bucks.

@FeatherFriendFiona Oh man guys that’s not what the prices look like for me at the market I go to in town. it’s like 10 dollars for 4 chicken breasts. I don’t eat chicken a lot but last time I bought it , it was about this much

@Stargazer_0101 The whole leg quarters in the 10lb are cheap. It’s my dogs food along with some rice and veggies and organ meat.

I used to prepare homemade meals for my dogs, but my father would get chicken for free most weeks. However, when we had to buy it, all of the ingredients cost around $20 or more and lasted five days. We quit doing it after two years when it became too much. I feel horrible; I can tell they’re unsatisfied with what they’re getting presently.

Do you have any pet food pantries around you? It might not be ideal, but it should be nutritionally complete. Cat food would be the best bet to avoid incurring any gi issues and veterinary needs right now.

Do any dollar stores around you sell pet food? Even if you can only purchase a low-cost cat chow, that’s better than nothing. You can feed unseasoned meat (cooked without seasoning or oil). Scrambled eggs without spice or oil (in water).
