My fiancée and I foster for the local animal shelter, and we recently took in two brothers, just weaned off milk, from a hoarding situation. We mainly took them in to help the runt gain some weight and ensure he’s eating well. The shelter had them for a very short time, and they were too small for any anti-flea treatment, so my fiancée bathed them when we got them.
Here’s the current situation: we were playing with the kittens on our bed, and the bigger one was practicing his stalking and pouncing skills. Since his smaller brother was trying to sleep, I absentmindedly grabbed two stuffed toys from the carrier they came with. That was two days ago.
Today, while I was at work, my fiancée noticed a live flea on one of the brothers. It doesn’t seem like there are too many fleas, but the kittens were on our bed and floor, in a nylon and netted wall fence with a towel on the floor. At one point, one of the kittens escaped and ran across the carpet, but it wasn’t the one with the flea she saw.
My fiancée used flea spray on our bedroom carpet, and we bathed the kittens again. What other procedures would you recommend to prevent an infestation, re-infection of the kittens, and to protect our own cats who sometimes enter our room? We’re currently keeping the kittens in our bathroom in the same tent.
