Why won’t my cat take fluoxetine in liquid form?

My cat was prescribed fluoxetine for his anxiety because he keeps peeing outside his box. He managed to take it for the first four weeks after we found a way to mix it with his food. But now he refuses to eat anything with the medicine and even throws up when I try to squirt it in his mouth. I’m worried because he’s not eating at all now. Has anyone else faced this? I tried calling my vet but they were closed yesterday and all weekend.

Mix up what you give him so he doesn’t expect the taste. Try something really smelly to hide it.

I had a tough time with Prozac too. My cat hated it, and it really messed with our bond. His anxiety just got worse. But switching to gabapentin made a huge difference for us. When my cat’s cystitis acts up, a few days of gabapentin really helps.

They have a transdermal version that you can apply on their ears. It might cost a bit more, but could save you a lot of trouble later. I have to give my cat Xanax twice daily to prevent his cystitis. I follow it up with lots of treats and a kiss on the nose!

I have a picky cat with urinary issues too. We tried various flavors of wet treats until I found one he liked enough to get past the fluoxetine. I mix the medication with tuna or chicken broth to reduce drooling. I measure out 0.5ml of fluoxetine and mix it with 0.5ml of broth, then give it to him that way. Always give lots of love and treats afterward! You both will adjust over time. Good luck.
