Why is it so hard to adopt a dog

@Sawyer
My partner and I are looking to adopt soon. I’ve been checking out listings for small dogs, and it’s all chihuahuas and mixes. I love chihuahuas, but my partner prefers fluffier dogs. It’s tough!

Why do people still breed pit bulls?

It’s usually because they’re too lazy or want to make money from selling puppies. It’s so sad because so many dogs are euthanized each year.

@Scout
Exactly! There are so many pit bulls in shelters already. It’s heartbreaking that people still choose to breed them when so many need homes.

I met someone once who was trying to sell a puppy because it had outgrown the size she wanted. It just shows how some people don’t understand the responsibilities of dog ownership.

Some people breed them for dog fighting, which is horrible. I adopted a pit mix who was used as a bait dog. She was terrified and had a rough past.

@Josie
In my area, many people want a pit bull as a guard dog. They might want a dog that looks intimidating, even if the dog is sweet.

@Wylie
What area are you in? I’d love to help find some dogs for you.

@Wylie
Not true! Shepherds and huskies are tied for second most euthanized breed in shelters. There are many rescues dedicated to them.

That might be true in some areas. But in mine, it’s really hard to find any dog under 35 lbs at shelters. I live in a densely populated city, and most dogs available are pit bulls. If a husky comes in, there are so many applications that you really need to have previous breed experience to get one. I spent two years looking for a non-pit bull and finally gave up.

@Wylie
Same with my local shelters. That’s why some people end up going to backyard breeders. There are hardly any good family dogs available.

I have to disagree. Shelters in my area are full of dogs that would be great family pets. They may not have purebred puppies, but there are many wonderful dogs looking for homes.

@Zen
Where are you located? I’m in rural Indiana and it seems like all we have are big, reactive dogs with past issues. I had to travel to Texas to get my husky, who was an adult rescue.

@Zen
It might be different for each area. Here, it’s rare to find good dogs in shelters. Most of what you find are pit bulls or very old small dogs that get adopted quickly.

If a shelter is offering purebred dogs for $500, they likely have a good adoption rate. $500 is a reasonable price considering the vet care and costs involved.

@Rowan
I always ask people if they want a companion or a bargain when they complain about adoption fees.

If you’re in a rural area, try looking into farm dog rescues. They tend to have fewer restrictions than typical rescues.

@Wylie
I went to a breeder because I couldn’t handle the endless searching and denials after two years. I’m not rich, but I felt it was worth it for a good, well-behaved dog.

@Wylie
In Australia, it’s tough even if you don’t want a small fluffy breed. My sister faced many rejections despite having a nice home. It seems like they have stricter rules for younger applicants.

In my area, shelters require fencing and inspections. I live on acres, and it’s tough because I don’t have a fence.
