My dog has been licking her butt a lot lately—like 20 times a day for about 5 minutes straight. The area looks a bit redder than usual too. I try to stop her after 30 seconds, but she’s been doing this for a week now. Before, she only licked after pooping, maybe three or four times a day. I can’t get a vet appointment for about 2 months. What should I do?
Her anal glands probably need to be emptied. That could explain the licking.
LOL, it’s probably anal glands. The vet can help with that. You should call and see if a tech can express them sooner.
I just had my dog groomed and they expressed the anal glands. You might want to try that too.
Also check for fleas around that area. Fleas can cause a lot of itching, and if your dog is furry, mats can form that irritate the skin.
You could try to express the anal glands yourself, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not sure how to do it.
Seriously, where do you live that it takes 2 months for a vet appointment? Try calling around to other vets. Pet groomers can also help with the glands.
Has she had any new food or treats? It could be an allergic reaction causing her to lick more.
Definitely get a groomer to express her glands if you can. It’s better than waiting for a vet appointment.
Make sure to get an appointment for an anal gland expression. It’s important.

Expressing anal glands isn’t too hard. Just make sure they don’t become compacted.

I do it myself when I groom my dog. Just be careful if you try it; it can get messy.

Some groomers do it too, and it’s way cheaper than a vet visit.
