When to take my dog to the vet for watery diarrhea?

My dog suddenly had explosive diarrhea at 6:40 am. Then at 9 am, it happened again, and again at 11:15 am and 1:15 pm. The last two were pure liquid. So that’s four times now, and it’s 1:50 pm here. He drank some water after the last incident, and I’m thinking of making an electrolyte solution. His gums look okay, and he’s able to stand and walk fine. Is it safe to see if this resolves by tomorrow, or does he need to get in today? Should I make a salt and sugar electrolyte solution now and give it to him every 30-60 minutes? I’ve just never seen diarrhea so watery before, so I wasn’t sure.

Any other symptoms? Is he eating? That kind of diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Did your dog get ahold of any strange food or poison?

He wants to eat and was trying to steal my other dog’s kibble, so maybe that’s a good sign? I was wondering if I should let him eat rice or wait. It’s about 2:30 pm now.

May be a reaction to the new treat. Try watery rice with no seasoning. If tolerated, add some boiled chicken and plenty of fresh water.

It’s been almost 4 hours since the last diarrhea, and he just drank all the water from the rice but didn’t eat. I’m relieved he’s keeping water down.

My rule of thumb is if they are acting normal other than the diarrhea, do the rice and chicken for 24 hours. If there’s no improvement, call the vet. If they are acting unusual or lethargic, call immediately.

I’d try the electrolyte solution, little bit at a time. Wait on the rice until you see if he can keep liquid down. If he vomits, you need to go to the vet. I hope your pup feels better soon.

Thank you! I’m hopeful since he’s kept water down. I guess I’ll know in the next 30 minutes if he goes again or not :crossed_fingers:.

Could have just eaten something bad. Seems like a normal reaction to a stomach bug. If it persists longer than two days or he seems lethargic or shaky, then it’s time to see a vet.

When this happens to me, I stop kibble and feed rice and boiled chicken for a few meals. It can’t hurt to call and ask your vet for advice.
