Wanting to adopt a cat but can't take them in yet—looking for advice

Hi, I (M22) frequently visit a local cat café that has shelter cats up for adoption. I’ve met a cat with an amazing personality, and I really want to take him in. However, my current student apartment doesn’t allow pets, and it’s too small anyway. I finish my studies in 6 months and might move out then, but I don’t know where or with whom yet. This cat needs attention and affection, and I’m worried he would need a friend.

Should I give up on this idea and hope he finds a good family? Or are there ways to temporarily house him until I can take him in? I worry about taking him to my tiny apartment, and I don’t want to get in trouble. Any advice would be appreciated!

It’s tough, but it sounds like it’s not the right time to adopt. You don’t have a stable place for him, and it would be confusing for the cat if you had to move him around. It’s better to wait until you’re settled.

I agree. You’ll fall in love with many cats in your life, but it’s important to wait until you have the right environment for one. In the meantime, consider donating toys or treats to the café to help the other cats.

There are tons of cats looking for homes, and you’ll find another one when the time is right. It wouldn’t be fair to adopt a pet into an unstable situation.

Most adoption agencies want to ensure you can provide a stable home, so it’s best to wait until you’re in a better position. Trust me, sometimes the right pet finds you when you’re ready.

You’re right to consider his well-being. People who adopt pets in unstable situations often end up facing more challenges later. It’s better to wait until you can truly provide for him.

Listen to your instincts. If it’s not the right time, it’s okay to let him go. You can always check back on him later if he’s still available when you’re ready.
