Hi there. I have two adult cats, one is 4 and the other is almost 9. They were both vaccinated as kittens, but they haven’t been vaccinated since because our old vet told us that this was not necessary if they are strictly indoor cats. Now, we have a puppy who will be going outside in a few weeks since he just completed his vaccination series. I called my new vet and asked if it would be a good idea to have both cats vaccinated since my puppy will be going outside and could potentially track things inside with his feet. They said it would be a good idea and quoted me for two exams and a round of shots for each. I suggested that they would probably both need a booster since they haven’t been vaccinated for several years, but the vet said that there is no need for this. Is this correct? One of the cats hasn’t received a vaccine in 4 years and the other hasn’t received any in 8+ years.
I think it’s a good idea to get them vaccinated, especially with a new puppy in the house. Even if they’re indoor cats, things can still get tracked in. But IDK why the vet said no boosters are needed, that seems odd.

Yeah, that sounds strange to me too. My vet always recommends boosters for adult cats, especially if they haven’t been vaccinated in a while.

Right? I thought they would need them since it’s been so long. I’m just trying to keep everyone safe.
My cat is also strictly indoor, but I still take her for boosters every few years. Better safe than sorry. You never know what could happen.

Exactly, I feel the same way. Plus, if they ever do get out, you want them to be protected.
It really varies by vet. Some are more cautious than others. I’d recommend getting a second opinion if you’re unsure about it.

That’s a solid idea. I’d want to be sure before making a decision.
If they haven’t been vaccinated in so long, I’d definitely consider getting boosters. The vet’s advice doesn’t sound quite right to me.
I had a similar situation. My vet said it’s not always necessary for indoor cats, but I still opted for the boosters just to be safe.

Did your vet explain why they thought it wasn’t necessary? It might help to ask them for more info next time.
