Tips on getting a dog used to me?

My stepbrother got a dog, but he’s been kinda lacking in taking care of him. I’ve been taking care of him sometimes. When I stand in front of him, he growls, so I sit down and he’s happy. I feed him cheese while standing to get him used to me, but I want some other tips.

Look up Rocky Kanaka, ‘Sitting with Dogs.’ He works with scared shelter dogs and sits down with his back to them.

Thank you! I’ll definitely check it out.

So happy you care for this dog.

He used to be my sister and her boyfriend’s dog, and they beat him as ‘discipline’ and let their other dog attack him. Now he’s traumatized, and they gave him to my stepbrother, who stopped taking care of him after he chewed up a phone cord. I’m taking care of him with the limited time I have due to school. He’s really a sweet dog and has stopped growling at me, but he still cowers away. It’s a work in progress. I have two older dogs that he plays with, so he’s also getting used to other dogs again.

Aw, poor dog. I am so happy he finally is with a good person.:heart::heart::heart::heart:

Try using treats to build a positive association. Sit quietly and let him come to you. Patience is key!

Consider using a calm voice and gentle movements. Avoid direct eye contact initially; it can be seen as a threat.

Playing with toys can also help him feel more comfortable. Engage him in fun activities to build trust.
