Yesterday I had to take my dog Bella to the vet because she was sick. I thought she just had an upset tummy, but the vet said she had a serious infection in her uterus. She was in critical condition and needed emergency surgery. I was so hopeful, but during the surgery, she stopped breathing and her heart gave out. I signed a DNR because I didn’t want her to suffer, but now I can’t shake this guilt. I keep thinking maybe CPR would have saved her. She was my first dog, and I’ve had her since middle school. I’m in college now, and I miss her so much. How do I cope with this guilt?
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s incredibly hard to lose a pet, especially one that means so much to you. Remember that you made the best decision you could with the information you had.
Guilt is a common feeling when we lose a pet. Try to focus on the happy memories you had with Bella. She knew you loved her, and she had a good life with you.
It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. Losing a pet is like losing a family member. Talk about it with friends or consider joining a support group for pet loss.
Just remember, you did what you thought was best for Bella. She loved you unconditionally, and that’s what matters. Take care of yourself during this tough time.
