Skittish cat got outside

This is something that I have never had to deal with in my 22 years of living, and I am at a loss of what to do. On September 12, 2024 a friend of mine opened the door and my cat ran outside. My friend has outdoor cats so she didn’t think anything of it and just let her go and didn’t tell me until 30 minutes after it happened. My cat is VERY skittish. When you want to pet her you have to walk up to her extremely calmly and let her sniff your hand before she even lets you go near her. (She came from an abusive home before we got her). I have been beside myself. Can’t sleep. Can’t think of anything else. It’s been rough. We put food, water, a camera, her cat bed, and her litter out on the porch and put a security camera out there as well. We have caught her on the camera and opened the door for her to come in, but she runs away every time due to the noise of the door opening. We bought a humane trap 3 days ago and put it out there. The first night the camera caught her going up to it, smelling it, and running away. Didn’t even stay to eat. We tried it one more night and caught an opossum, and didn’t see her on the security camera at all that night. Last night she also wasn’t caught on the camera, even without the trap being put out. We are going to try and keep the garage door cracked open and the door to enter our hous through the garage open tonight, but she has been seen going on the porch. If anyone has any ideas at all or any suggestions please let me know.

We implanted a chip in her. We called our local vet and animal shelter. We posted on all surrounding town groups on Facebook that she was missing and even made a ring post as well. People have been very helpful, but unfortunately, she has not come home.

As an parent of a skittish cat, that too a tripod, this is my nightmare. I hope you find her.

Look around in sewers and pipelines, any hiding spots. Even if they’re tiny and narrow.

I’m so sorry. I hope you find her soon. You did almost everything I would’ve done. As a fellow parent of a skittish cat, my sincerest good luck to you. :frowning:

Who’s the human she trusts the most? I would recommend they should sit outside in the night to offer reassurance and gently bring her in. No cages, trust.

I got my cat back by sitting quietly, making sad kitten mewling sounds, and keeping an open dish of her favorite treats nearby.

Most cats appear to be lured to the sounds that disturbed kittens make.

When you get her back, take her to the vet to check for parasites.
