Question about pet insurance and what counts as pre-existing issues?

I have a 12-year-old cat, and I’m thinking of getting pet insurance now that she’s getting older. She’s had small issues in the past like skin rashes, but nothing major. Recently, I found a small hard bump on her forehead. I haven’t had a vet check it yet, and I’m wondering if it would be considered a pre-existing condition if I get insurance now. Will they cover the exam and possible treatment? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

Getting insurance for an older cat might not be worth it. You may be better off saving money monthly instead of paying premiums.

I understand the concern, but I’m more worried about potential health issues as she gets older. I’d prefer having insurance to help cover costs. My main question is about whether this bump would be seen as pre-existing or not.

@Giosa
Insurance companies often claim a lot of things as pre-existing. It could be tough to get them to cover something like cancer or arthritis, even if you weren’t aware of it. The best time to get insurance is when they’re young, but it’s still worth trying. You never know!

@Ira
That’s not always the case. My dog had cancer, and it was covered. They even covered surgery for mammary masses.

@Ira
That makes sense. I’ve heard both sides, but my family members have gotten pet insurance later without much issue. I guess I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up!

I have ASPCA insurance for my pets, and I’ve never had a claim denied. You could call them and ask what they count as pre-existing. Keep in mind that older animals usually come with higher premiums, and it’s harder to increase coverage later.

It really depends on the company. Some are more lenient than others. Definitely read the terms and talk to friends or family about their experiences. You don’t want to be paying and not getting anything back.

@Giosa
The insurance premiums for a senior cat can be very high. Also, without annual vet checkups, some conditions might be considered pre-existing. Your vet’s office might give you more info on what’s typically denied.

@Sky
I’ve already checked, and the premium is $50 a month. They do cover most age-related issues, though not prescription food. She hasn’t been to the vet yearly, more like every two years. I just want to make sure I’m covering her health as she gets older.

@Giosa
I’ve had pet insurance for my 11-year-old cat and it’s saved me a lot of money. I use MetLife, and they’ve covered things without issue. As for the bump, it wouldn’t count as pre-existing unless the vet has diagnosed it before you got insurance.

@Juneta
Thank you so much! I’ll look into MetLife. I just want to be prepared for her later years, and this helps clear up my worries about the bump.

You’re doing great! Cats can live long, healthy lives with proper care. Feel free to ask if you have more questions!
