I just got this beautiful husky from a Hispanic guy who’s been keeping his pups outside. She’s very afraid of human affection and touch—it’s to the point where I’m scared to even touch her. She’s not eating or drinking (I’ve only had her for approximately 10 hours). Should I give her time to adapt, or should I continue to show affection?
I would reach out to local rescues to see if anyone else is able and willing to take her and her situation on. It can take months for a dog like that to come around and feel at ease and even then it may only be small steps. I had also read your other post where you have a couple of Rotties and a Dogo that sadly got ahold of one of your cats and in the attempt to save the cat I think you stated that you broke your foot when you fell and today being your daughters birthday. It sounds like you already have a very full plate and where I appreciate you saving this girl and trying to help her, your current situation may be a little too hectic for her situation. She definitely needs a very calm and quiet safe space. She will need to slowly be introduced to different environments and settings to see where she will feel most comfortable. See if you can locate someone with the experience and resources to get her into the vet to be seen and possible on some medication to relax her so her healing and process can begin.
It’s crucial to give her time to adapt. She may be scared due to her previous environment. Provide a safe, calm space, and let her approach you when she’s ready. Offer food and water quietly. Gradually, she’ll likely start to trust you. Patience is key in building her confidence.
