Outdoor cats and fleas… what should I do?

I just adopted my first cat and today, after picking her up to bring her inside, I found a flea on my arm while driving. I’m freaking out because fleas were never something I thought much about. I’ve got a vet appointment next week to check her out and plan to get her on flea prevention after. But will it even work since she’s mostly outside (60% outside, 40% inside)?

I’m also scared about a flea infestation in my house. If I’ve seen one flea, there’s probably more. Luckily, I don’t have much carpet, just one couch and two beds, so I think I can handle treating them. Does anyone have experience with this? I’d love to hear what it’s like.

I’ve considered making her an indoor cat, but she seems so sad whenever I bring her in at night. She meows the whole time, trying to go back out. I’m torn and feel like a bad owner. Are fleas just something you have to deal with if your cat spends time outside?

If your cat goes outside, you’ll probably get fleas in your house at some point. Also, outdoor cats face dangers like cars, other animals, and diseases from fights with other cats. I think keeping her indoors would be best. She’ll get used to it, and it’s safer in the long run.

You’re right. I was surprised when I looked into it and found out how many people are against outdoor cats. Growing up, everyone I knew let their cats out. I should’ve done more research before getting her, but I guess it didn’t cross my mind. I’ll keep her inside from now on. Thanks for the advice!

@Briley
I’m glad you’re open to the idea. Some people get really defensive about it. Have you thought about building a catio? It doesn’t have to be big, just a small area where she can get some fresh air safely. We’ve had one for years, and our cats love it. They don’t even try to get out through the doors anymore.

@Shea
That’s a great idea! I actually came across catios while doing research, and I’m thinking about saving up for one. In the meantime, I’ll get her some more toys and perches to keep her busy inside. I just want her to stay safe and happy.

@Briley
You should also try harness training! That way you can take her outside on a leash. Or like the other commenter said, a catio could work too.
