My Ex Abandoned Two Senior Animals, and They’ve Needed Excessive Vet Visits

My ex left behind his 15-year-old cat and his sister’s 11-year-old Aussie. His sister openly admitted that her husband used to abuse the dog and only intervened once they had kids. She also mentioned that the dog hadn’t had dental care since before her oldest child was born.

The cat racked up $1.6k in vet bills due to high blood pressure, early kidney disease, and a lack of preventatives. I took her in mainly because of her eye, and thankfully I did, because the eye could have burst. I’ve already spent $600 on the dog and found out she needs about $2k in dental work. I’ve had to switch her food and put her on supplements as well. Both animals have improved significantly and fully trust me now. The cat has much more energy and is finally grooming herself again (she had 4 large mats when he left, and they’ve all gone away).

My ex left 3 months before our wedding, so I’m left with little money. I have a great job, but these vet bills are insane and have drained my savings. The dog and my dog have insurance, but since all these issues were due to neglect (pre-existing conditions), the insurance isn’t covering anything.

I’m not getting rid of them (I hate that I even have to say that). This is just a vent, and I’m beyond frustrated.

I’m not asking for money. I’m just so frustrated right now. I don’t understand how someone could neglect an animal or dispose of them once they have kids. The dog was given to my ex because her kids wouldn’t stop grabbing her, which eventually led to the Aussie nipping (something they’re known to do). I told my ex he couldn’t take the dog back to her home, so he abandoned both animals.
