My dog keeps throwing up… anyone else had this issue?

I am looking for some advice. My 9-month-old corgi has been vomiting orange bile regularly. It’s usually before meals, even when we’re not late feeding her. We took her to the vet, and they prescribed omeprazole. We’ve been feeding her smaller meals throughout the day (4 times!), but she still vomits sometimes.

I don’t know what else to try… Has anyone dealt with this and found a solution?

Does she seem to be in any pain? My yorkie had similar symptoms and ended up having pancreatitis.

Nope, she doesn’t seem to be in any pain. She’s still eating well and playing like crazy. Did your dog show any other symptoms besides the vomiting?

As someone who used to work as a vet tech, here’s what I’d do. Keep giving the Omeprazole, and try switching her to a GI-friendly diet. White fish or chicken with squash works well. Eggs are also easy on the stomach and good for digestion.

Get a full blood panel done too. It could be pancreatitis or maybe something with the liver. If things keep going the same way, I’d recommend seeing a gastrointestinal specialist for another opinion. In puppies, regular vomiting can quickly turn serious, so keep an eye out for signs of dehydration. If you notice any strange behavior, it’s best to go to an emergency vet.

Hope everything turns out okay!

Have you done any tests yet? I think bile can sometimes be a sign of indigestion, but it might also be pancreatitis or another issue with the liver. I’ve got an older dog, but doing a full blood panel gave us some answers about what’s happening with his organs. Might be a good idea to test your pup just to make sure there’s nothing serious going on.

Thanks for the advice! We haven’t done bloodwork yet, but I’ll definitely ask for it when we go back to the vet.

At your dog’s age, it might be a good idea to get an x-ray done to rule out any congenital issues or vascular problems. It’s not normal for a puppy to keep throwing up bile, so it’s better to look into it sooner rather than later.

While it’s not necessarily an emergency, it’s still something you want to handle soon. Consistent vomiting could lead to things like aspiration pneumonia. Plus, it can’t be pleasant for your dog to keep throwing up!

Just make sure to get the omeprazole into her system. It’s not a strong medication with bad side effects; it just reduces the acid production a bit. It’s pretty mild but works well enough for most dogs.

Also, maybe stop relying on this forum over your vet’s advice. It doesn’t help.

Yeah, I’m going to give it a try as soon as I can get to the store. Thanks for the… helpful tone, I guess.

The person who posted this already went to the vet, which is why they have the meds. They’re just looking for extra advice from other people. Relax, and maybe eat some chocolate. It might improve your mood. Hope your dog feels better soon!

What are you currently feeding her?

She’s on Nulo Challenger, and we mix in pumpkin, blueberries, and carrots when we have them.

You might want to try switching her food slowly to something like Purina Puppy Sensitive Stomach. You could also add some of their canned food to the mix (about 25% of the meal).

It could be a food sensitivity, or even a flare-up of pancreatitis. Switching to a sensitive diet might help. If that doesn’t work, you could look into a prescription diet. And don’t hesitate to get a second opinion from another vet!

My dog does the same thing when he hasn’t eaten in a while. I make sure to give him a snack before bed and feed him right away in the morning. It seems to keep the bile vomiting at bay. I think it’s fairly common.

My dog used to throw up bile when his stomach was empty for too long. We started feeding him more often, and the vomiting stopped.

Why haven’t you given your dog the meds the vet prescribed? You’re here asking questions, but you’re not even following the vet’s advice. :man_facepalming:

The medication is just covering up the symptoms, not addressing the cause of the bile. They’re looking for more options, which could help the next vet appointment. There’s nothing wrong with asking people who’ve gone through something similar. No need to shame someone for wanting to help their pet.

They’re just asking for others’ experiences. That’s what this forum is for. No need to be rude.

I should mention that we haven’t started the omeprazole yet. I’m a bit hesitant about giving it to her daily for the rest of her life.

It’s just an antacid. Your pup will be fine. It’s better to give the omeprazole than have her throwing up every day, right?
