My cat fought me when I put him in the carrier... any tips?

I set up a vet appointment for my cat to get checked out, and we’ve been waiting patiently. Someone canceled their appointment tomorrow, so the vet can see my kitty. I’ve only had him for a week, and I put him in a cat carrier once when he came home with me. He was really frightened. Is there a trick to making this easier? Can anyone give me any advice for tomorrow? The vet mentioned that in the future they can give me a pill to help calm him before visits, but they’ve never seen him before and can’t do that for tomorrow.

I totally understand how stressful this can be. For now, try to make the carrier feel more like a safe space. You can put his favorite blanket or toy inside to make it more inviting.

That’s a great idea! I’ll definitely try that. I just want him to feel safe.

You might also want to try letting him explore the carrier on his own before you need to put him in it. Leave it out for a bit and let him go in and out as he pleases.

Good call! I’ll do that tonight so he’s a bit more used to it.

When it’s time to go, try to be calm and reassuring. Sometimes talking to them softly can help. You can also try putting a treat in the carrier to encourage him to go in.

I’ll definitely try the treat trick! Thanks for the advice.

If he really resists, don’t force him in. You can try gently coaxing him or waiting for a moment when he’s more relaxed to guide him in.

That makes sense. I don’t want to stress him out even more.

I’ve heard using a pheromone spray can help calm cats. You might want to try that before you leave for the vet.

I didn’t think about that! I’ll definitely look into getting some.
