Moving to another state with my senior kitty

Hey there, I’m moving into a new home with my partner that is pet-friendly. I have a senior kitty who I adopted when he was 11, and now he’s 16 going on 17. He’s usually relaxed and never bites or scratches, but he does have FIV and allergies, which make him itchy sometimes. He really doesn’t enjoy car rides and has cried the whole time during previous trips. Once, he even broke out of his carrier and clung to me. I’m going to drive from San Diego to Washington State in a sedan with my father. I want to make sure my kitty is as comfortable as possible. What should I do about his litter situation? How can I ensure he eats and drinks under stress? Any recommendations for good travel carriers, dishes, or litter boxes would be greatly appreciated.

When I traveled with my two kitties, I found using disposable roasting pans for a litter box worked well. You can put a little litter in them and just rinse them out when you stop. It makes cleanup easy.

That sounds really practical. If your kitty is not used to being in a crate, consider using a soft-sided carrier but make sure it’s secure. Frequent breaks for bathroom stops are also important.

To help with eating and drinking, try bringing portable dishes and offer food and water during breaks. Cats can get picky while traveling, so don’t worry if he doesn’t eat much during the drive.

Thanks! I’ll definitely pack some portable dishes for him.

Lickable treats could be a good option for snacks during the trip. They are easy to give and many cats love them, which might help keep him calmer.

Make sure to create a shaded area in the car for him to relax. Keeping the environment cool and comfortable can make a big difference.

Good luck with the move. It can be stressful for both of you, but planning ahead will help. Just remember to take your time and give him breaks.
