Looking for a small automated door for my dogs... any suggestions?

Hey folks, I’m trying to build something to keep my dogs entertained while I’m away at work. I’m looking for a small automated door, like a rodent-sized door. I need it to be on a timer, kind of like an automated chicken coop door, but smaller—around 6"x6" to 6"x9" would be perfect. Just something large enough for them to stick their heads in and retrieve little items or snacks I put in there. I’ve been searching for a while but can’t find anything smaller than a full chicken coop door. Any advice or product recommendations would really help me out.

Have you checked out pet supply stores? Sometimes they have small doors designed for cats or small dogs.

I looked at a few stores but didn’t see anything that small. I’ll have to keep checking. Thanks!

Maybe try looking online? There are some smaller pet doors that could fit your needs.

I remember seeing these doors that are more for rodents, like for hamsters or guinea pigs, but IDK if they would work for your dogs. Worth checking though.

That’s a good idea. I never thought to look at stuff meant for other animals. Thanks for the tip!

Just be sure it’s sturdy enough for your dogs. Some of those smaller doors might not hold up.

Have you thought about making a DIY door? It might be easier than finding something pre-made.

I was thinking about that. Any suggestions on what I should use to make it automated?

@Nolan
You could look into using a small motor with a timer. Those are pretty easy to set up.

Sounds doable. I’ll start looking into motors. Thanks for the suggestion!

What about checking out pet automation forums? They might have more ideas on lighter doors.

That’s a great idea. I hadn’t thought about looking at forums specifically for pet automation.

@Nolan
Yeah, you might find someone who built something similar. Always cool to get ideas from others.

Just be patient with the process. Sometimes the perfect solution takes a bit to find. Good luck!
