Is it time to say goodbye to my dog? Struggling to decide

My Australian Shepherd mix is a rescue and my first dog. I got her at 4.5 years old, and now she’s about 16. Over the past 6-7 months, she’s been declining slowly. She paces a lot, stares at walls, and doesn’t always respond to her name unless I’m in front of her. She’s lost weight, started peeing inside the house, and seems to ignore it. Her back legs are weak, and she sometimes slides and can’t stand. The vet says she’s relatively okay for her age aside from likely arthritis and thyroid issues. Despite this, she still eats well and occasionally runs around. I’m struggling with the decision of whether to put her down. I fear I may be selfish for wanting her to stay with me, but I don’t want her to suffer either. How did you know when it was time? Based on what I’ve described, do you think it’s time? I’m conflicted and would appreciate any insights.

It’s really difficult, and asking this question often means the time is close. If she’s happy and pain-free, it might not be time yet. Consider preparing for when that time comes.

It’s better to do it a little too early than wait too long. Ask yourself if your pet is still experiencing joy.

I went through something similar. Ultimately, I decided to end my dog’s pain, and while it was awful, I believe she’s in a better place now.

The decision is tough. If she’s having more bad days, it might be time to consider what’s best for her.

It’s hard to tell when a dog is in pain, but pacing and restlessness can be signs.
