My mom has a 17-year-old cat named Box who has been declining rapidly over the past few days. Overnight, she lost her ability to walk, and my mom has decided it’s time. We are taking her to the vet this afternoon for the last time. My mom has a special area where she buries all her beloved pets, and she wants to place Box there with them. The problem is that the ground is frozen solid right now, and we’ve had below-freezing temperatures for days. We are even expecting more sleet and snow in the next couple of days. I remember my grandma had a bird in the freezer in a bag after it passed in the winter, but I’m unsure if it’s okay to put a larger animal like Box in the freezer. If we do, should we put her in a container or bag? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Yeah, I agree. Just make sure to wrap her up well. A heavy-duty bag sounds good.

Exactly, something that won’t rip easily. Just to keep her safe and clean.
It’s sad but sometimes necessary. I think it’s really thoughtful that your mom wants to bury her with the others.

I wrapped my pet in a blanket and put her in a box until the ground thawed.
You’re doing the right thing. I think it’s okay to use the freezer temporarily. Just keep her wrapped up.

I had a friend who did this and it worked out fine. Just make sure the freezer is clean.
