Is it bad to get a pet after your previous one just passed?

I wanted to get some thoughts on this. I was diagnosed with ADHD and level 1 Autism. I live with my parents and had a pet bunny for 5.5 years who passed away two nights ago. He was my first pet, and my mom and I co-owned him. She did most of the work, but I hung out with him a lot. We both got attached. After he passed, I cried all day, but I tend to repress my feelings or move on quickly. Now, I’ve wanted a cat for a while, and I made the mistake of looking at adoption websites yesterday to cope. I found a few cats I liked. On one hand, I want a cat, but I’m worried I might just be trying to replace my bunny. I don’t want my mom to think I didn’t love my bunny. I believe I could explain that it’s not about replacing him, but I’m more concerned about my well-being. Having a new pet might help me feel less alone after what happened. What do you all think?

I totally get where you’re coming from. Losing a pet is tough, and it’s natural to want some company afterward. Just make sure you’re ready for the responsibility of a new pet.

Yeah, and it’s okay to grieve while also wanting to move forward. A new pet can bring joy without diminishing the love you had for your bunny.

Getting a cat could be a great way to heal. Just remember to take your time and make sure you’re ready. It’s not bad to want companionship.

Exactly! And it sounds like you really thought this through. Just be honest with your mom about your feelings.

You might be surprised how much a new pet can help you cope. Just make sure you’re not rushing into it. It’s okay to feel like you need a buddy.

Right? And don’t let others’ opinions dictate your choices. You know what you need best!

I think it’s important to give yourself time to grieve, but wanting another pet isn’t wrong. Just be sure it’s a decision that feels right for you.

Yeah, definitely! It’s about finding a balance. Maybe wait a little while and see how you feel?

It’s okay to feel conflicted. Remember that your bunny will always have a special place in your heart, and another pet can bring new joy.

Exactly! And pets bring their own unique love. It doesn’t take away from what you had with your bunny.
